Alright, first off, you're probably here because you've recieved a virus known as "XP Antivirus Protection 2011" - the Malware urges you to download/buy the new version. Don't.

You'll note that it blocks pretty much all Antivirus Software. So, we have to dig deeper and do some Registry edits. I'd recommend downloading Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware, as they're both great programs. Malwarebytes gets rid of the Malware on your system, whereas SuperAntiSpyware gets rid of the Spyware on your system. I've been really impressed by SAS, as it can generally bypass most Viruses which attempt to stall it. The following two Registry edits are used to enable you to Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and other applications/AV programs you might have. These are to be written in NotePad, and THEN SAVED AS A .reg - this step is very important! Then, once finished typing, double click on the file, which should be saved as a .reg (It'll have a rubix's cube looking-thing on it) and when it asks to merge into the registry, hit OK. It should be successful.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTexefileshellopencommand]
@=""%1" %*"

Then in a seperate file write:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClasses.exe]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassessecfile][-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTsecfile]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.exeshellopencommand] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTexefileshellopencommand]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.exe] @="exefile"
"Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

Once you've typed these up and executed them, run SAS and MBAM. Run full scans from both. Save those .reg files in a secure folder in case you get the virus again. You might want to download Stinger, from McAfee, too, as it's powerful. Be warned that the Stinger takes eons to scan. Also, running a boot scan from Avast! Free antivirus might work as well. I'm a huge fan of MBAM and SAS, as they were the only two I needed after I typed the .reg edits.

If none of this works for you, Boot up in Safe Mode, and search for "Defender.exe" and when you find it, if it's in a suspicious place, delete. Then go into the Recycle bin, and delete again. You MUST double delete this kind of thing. If the other methods works for you, though, I'd stick with that.

Also, search up the virus when you're done. There might still be some traces, as the malware is continually evolving, getting smarter and smarter.

If you have any questions, suggestions, alterations, anything, post here.

Cheers,
